Tall Stature
Background
Definitions
Tall stature refers to a height more than 2 standard deviations above the mean for age, sex, and population. Statistically, this is defined as the 2.3rd percentile.
While short stature is a common presenting concern, few children or parents seek medical attention, presumably because it is socially acceptable and/or may be seen as advantageous.
Etiology and Pathophysiology

Physiologic/normal variants
- Constitutional advancement of growth
- Familial tall stature
Endocrine disorders - Hyperthyroidism
- Obesity

- Precocious puberty (growth spurt)
Genetic disorders
Disproportionate overgrowth - Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome
- Homocystinuria
- Klinefelter syndrome (XXY)
- Marfan syndrome
Proportionate overgrowth - Fragile X syndrome
