Therapeutic Abortion

Background

Therapeutic abortion or induced abortion, henceforth referred to as abortion, is a medical procedure used to terminate a pregnancy.

Abortions are common, with an estimated 25% of women will undergo one in their lifetime. Approximately 3 in 10 pregnancies end in abortion worldwide.

The choice of procedure depends on gestational age, patient preferences, clinician experience, and availability of services.

Procedures

Medication Abortion

Generally available up to 70 days gestation. Regimen consist of:

  • Mifepristone 200 mg PO
  • Misoprostol 800 mcg BUCCALLY 24-48 hours after mifepristone is taken

Procedural Abortion

Aspiration Abortion

Done up to 14 weeks of gestation.

The cervix is dilated and a cannula with vacuum aspirator is used to remove pregnancy tissue.

Dilation and Evacuation (D&E)

Preferred method for more advanced gestation (2nd trimester).

The cervix is dilated and suction and instruments such as forceps are used to clear pregnancy tissue.
